Welcome back to "My Thought Bubble" Newsletter! It's time to talk about my favorite topic... MUSIC!
Public Service Announcement
I will be taking a pause on “My Thought Bubble” newsletter because I will be studying for my finals and focusing on passing my final 4 classes for the summer semester at my community college as well as finishing up my transition from my community college to LSU A&M. I will resume more than likely Wednesday. Thanks again for showing this incredible support on this project, and I promise this is only the beginning! I can’t wait to grow this baby into something so magical.
Now… let’s get on to the topic after that quick little PSA
Oh yes, if anyone knows me know I love music. I can’t go without it because I love discovering new artists everyday. Now, let’s talk about a song that’s been on repeat for me: Angel of Mine by Monica.
Now, Monica had every right to make this song a hit! Before I give you my take on the song, here are some stats I bet you didn’t know about.
Stats
Release and Chart Performance: Monica's version of "Angel of Mine" was released on November 9, 1998, as part of her album The Boy Is Mine. It topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for four weeks and peaked at number two on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
Year-End and Decade-End Rankings: The song was ranked third on Billboard's Hot 100 year-end chart for 1999 and placed 62nd on the 1990s decade-end chart.
International Performance: "Angel of Mine" also performed well internationally, reaching number five in Canada, number eight on the Adult Contemporary chart, and number 12 in Australia. However, it peaked at number 55 in the UK.
Spotify Streams: As of June 2023, "Angel of Mine" has surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify, making it Monica's third song to reach this milestone.
My thoughts on the song
I mean baby… she knew what she was doing with this song! This song reminds me of 2 things:
This reminds me of that 90s love you see on TV shows - Cory & Topanga (Boy Meets World), Chandler & Monica (Friends), Fran & Mr. Sheffield (The Nanny), Carl & Hariette (Family Matters), and the list continue. I am telling you 90s era I would love to experience. I am a lover boy at heart, and I feel if someone sends me this song - I would be over the moon just grateful to that person. That means they really value me.
This reminds me you would hear at a party (Shout-out to Pinterest for the pictures)
I would picture myself time travel back to the 90s and then when I’m there, I see that the party almost coming to an end, everyone hears the DJ going - before you we end the night, I want you and your love one to have a slow dance moment to end the night away. He plays Angel of Mine by Monica and the gentlemen ask the girl - may I have this dance? The girl goes yes. They start slow waltzing and having that slow dancing moment. I mean… THAT IS A WHOLE VIBE! I want to experience that so bad, but I hope one day I will.
I watch some 80s, 90s, and early 2000s shows as I was growing up, and I mean the love and chemistry they had was just there. Oh my gosh I would do anything to go back at that time, even though I was born in 2004 LOL.
This song and the way I think about it is appreciating the love you experience through your significant lover, your friend, your parents, etc. Anyone who you consider your “angel,” that is what I would describe this song. It’s too beautiful and here are some of the lyrics that stuck with me:
How you changed my world
You'll never know
I'm different now
You helped me grow
You came into my life
Sent from above
When I lost all hope
You showed me love
I never knew I could feel each moment
As if they were new
Every breath that I take
The love that we make
I only share it with you
When I first saw you, I already knew
There was something inside of you
Something I thought that I would never find
Angel of mine
The lyrics just make me want to cry, especially the instrumental version because it takes me back to childhood & those good times. I would do anything to time travel back to my childhood like I am so curious as to why time has to go by so fast. I would be so down to collaborate with Monica on this song and create a music video about it!
Additionally, this song has helped me change for the better going forward and enjoy those beautiful moments with people we love. Who knows when we will be able to see that person again? Who knows if we are able to get that time/relationship back? Cherish being in that present moment with that “angel” of yours!
Conclusion
To all of the lovely humans reading this, I hope you find someone you can reach out to and say to them - I consider you as an angel of mine because you help change my life for the better! With that being said, I send my love to all you guys reading this! I hope you found that angel of yours, and if you haven’t, it is okay. I am hopeful you will find them soon or in the future!
